The transition temperature is not the same as the injection temperature of the denitrification reagents, e.g. ammonia water, but it determines it significantly. The transition temperature results as a solution of the gas phase reaction kinetics. It represents the theoretical minimum temperature which must prevail in the gas mixture so that the denitrification reactions can take place.

In practice, the transition temperature is the minimum temperature that must prevail in each gas trail after injection and mixing in order for the denitrification reaction to achieve the desired effect. The injection temperature is a strongly plant dependent parameter. Although it is basically based on the transition temperature, it is influenced by other temperature effects. One important effect is the cooling of the flue gas by around 5°C to 10°C due to the evaporation of the solvent water from the denitrification reagents.

However, mixing processes in the gases, which are very viscous due to the high temperatures and are essentially determined by diffusion processes, also take place as a function of temperature. In addition, the heat loss from the flue gas system also comes into play in the case of long reaction distances. All this means that the injection temperature must actually be several 10°C higher than the transition temperature.
